Freaking Over-rated Movie

Recently, on a trip to Blockbuster, in a desperate maneuver to find something worth watching, my wife and I rented the Graduate. Desperation only in that it wasn't a new release, and it wasn't high high up on my list of things to see. '70s movies tend to bore me. They have a slower pacing and just take effort to get into. But hey, The Graduate is a AFI Top 100 movie. It's gonna be great.

Yeah, no. Gods that movie sucked. Like, really, hardcore sucked. There's almost no redeeming qualities to the movie... Ugh.

The basics is a such. This kid, whatever his name is (played by Dustin, the Hoff, Hoffman) has graduated college. He feels scared about his future, not knowing what to do with his life. In the end, he gets into an affair with a married woman (and friend of his parents), Mrs. Robinson. But, danger eventually ensues when he starts dating the Robinsons' daughter, Eeeelaine (yeah, uhm... you'll hear that enough at the end of the movie).

See, Mrs. Robinson doesn't want what's his face dating her daughter. So the beans get spilled about the affair, and Elaine dumps what's his face. Pity.

But what's his face kinda flips. He starts following her around, watching her. He finally approaches, and she at first finds him creepy, but very quickly (too quickly) she falls for him. He proposes, and would have gotten the girl, but her parents interceded. Those damn parents.

Now, Elaine has gotten an offer from another dude, and when all this goes down, she accepts. But when creepy stalker boy goes to her wedding, all climactic like, she goes with him, to live happily, I suppose.

First and foremost, the fuck? I mean, this dude is a stalker, and she finds that cute? Sweet, nice, cute, worth marrying. The fuck. There's no repercussions for the boy. He gets the girl, not jail time.

This teaches some very wrong lessons. It says "if the girl dumps you, follow her around, stalk her, and eventually she will marry you." Ugh... Plus, the pacing sucks, and the performance by Dustin is just too wooden.

Seriously people, why is this an AFI worthy classic. I know times have changed since the '70s, but goddamn. It's just wrong.
