It's Like a Million Arteries All Cried Out at Once
Super Size Me
There was a court case a year or so ago. Two girls sued McDonald's for their obesity. They said that because of the chain, they had gained over 100 pounds. A statement by the judge of that case said that if they could prove that McDonald's is a direct cause of their obesity, they would prove their case.
So that's what our guy, the documentary person, set out to do. Having a diet of solely McDonald's food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, he set off to show just how bad McDonald's food could be for you. The results do tend to speak for themselves.
There are movies that are scary for creatures popping out, gore, and cheap tactics meant to illicit a scared shriek. Then there's a movie like that that is scary not for what jumps out at you (which is nothing) but what it shows you. Without saying too much about what happens, I will say that his diet causes some radical changes to his body, both weight and health-wise. No one could have predicted what this diet did to him.
The movie documents his various days as he goes about eating and acting like the "average" American citizen (that;s a point he strive to show, that he makes himself act like many people that generally eat Mickey D's regularly). Along the way though, he gives us insight into how foods (both bad and good) are viewed by the government, school groups, families, and the average people. He gets insight from average people, meets with heads of office, lawyers... pretty well anyone he can talk to.
In the process of all this though, you get that look at what happens to him... and to say it's scary is selling it short. It seriously makes you not want to eat fast food again.
Let me just say that the film is very engaging. He is a master editor, with cuts and transitions that are fun to watch, which is good for a documentary. I mean, come on, this isn't a big action flick or an all out comedy. A good documentary keeps you engaged any way it can. I never got bored.
He also at times resorted to animation for certain sequences, which added a little light heartedness to the whole affair. Again, it engages while it informs. This was a seriously well crafted flick, and well worth checking out.
